Studio 9 Design was commissioned to reimagine a Grade II listed Victorian mansion set in the South Downs, transforming it into a warm and functional family home while respecting its historic character. Although the property featured beautiful proportions, high ceilings and elegant windows, previous extensions had created a disjointed layout that felt dark and lacked a clear narrative for modern living. The design focused on improving flow, maximising natural light and reconnecting the main living spaces with the surrounding landscape through a new orangery style rear extension and a carefully integrated side annexe.

Internally, the team redefined how the home was used, ensuring every space had purpose. One of the four sitting rooms was transformed into a cosy cinema room, while another became a relaxed games room designed for entertaining and family time. Throughout the interiors, a calm palette of muted neutrals layered with earthy tones creates depth and warmth while allowing the architecture and views of the South Downs to take centre stage. Colour was intentionally wrapped across walls, ceilings and joinery to produce a soft, tranquil atmosphere.

Natural materials and rich textures play a central role in the design. Limewash walls bring movement and subtle depth to the sitting room, while oversized herringbone timber flooring and limestone floors add timeless character and balance to the grand scale of the house. Bespoke and carefully sourced furniture, including vintage and antique pieces reupholstered in natural fabrics, sits alongside contemporary elements to create an organic, layered interior.

The result is a serene and timeless home that honours the property’s heritage while supporting modern family living. By responding to the light, landscape and history of the house, Studio 9 Design crafted an interior that feels both grounded and quietly elegant, blending comfort, texture and craftsmanship throughout.
